Affiliation

Since the summer of 2024, a Denomination Discernment Team comprised of clergy and lay leaders have studied the best options for future affiliation following disaffiliation from The United Methodist Church in 2023. Throughout this process, the goal has been to preserve Buncombe Street’s ministries while also studying the most effective ways to enhance and advance the Kingdom in the coming decades.

After careful consideration and prayer, The Denomination Discernment Team, Church Council, Staff-Parish Relations Committee, our clergy and church staff unanimously recommend that Buncombe Street Methodist Church become a part of the Global Methodist Church (GMC) denomination.

Buncombe Street members are being called to a churchwide vote to ratify this recommendation on February 9, 2025.On February 9, church members may stop by the Truluck Room at any time between 8:30 AM – 1:00 PM to cast their ballot. A churchwide email will be sent out that afternoon once votes have been tallied.

Pray. Learn. Discern.

In summary, we believe the below topics and the values and vision of Buncombe Street closely align with the mission and values of the Global Methodist Church.

  • Authority of Scripture
  • Support and accountability for clergy and staff
  • Buncombe Street has final decision on clergy selection and can search worldwide if needed
  • Powershift from denomination to the local church
  • We own property/endowments, apportionments reduced from 16% to 4%, and easy disaffiliation
  • Best fit for today and positions us for God ‘s plans for His Church at Buncombe Street

Watch this video from our church leadership as they expand on the key reasons for why we believe that affiliating with the Global Methodist Church positions us for the future of God’s Kingdom at Buncombe Street.
